這是柏格曼的半自傳影片，也是封卷之作。艾克達家族經營著烏普薩拉的城市劇院已兩代，時序為1907年聖誕節。故事主角是孩子芬妮與亞歷山大，不久他們的父親去世、母親改嫁，只好忍受著繼父的冷漠對待。導演帶領觀眾走入過去，使得童年、超自然、宗教、魔幻、真實等元素轉化融合，成為豐富的統一體，破天荒一舉奪下四座奧斯卡獎。
Young Fanny and Alexander come from an exuberant household in a 1907 Swedish town, where their wealthy parents manage a prominent local theatre. The widowed mother remarries the bishop and moves with them to his austere and forbidding chancery, where the children are treated miserably. The film chronicles all the conflicts and episodes in this complex semi-autobiographical family drama.
