「我的一生不是那麼順的，都跟一個『外』字有關。」作家聶華苓如此形容自己從中國、台灣、到最後定居美國的流亡生命。但本片溫婉地點出聶華苓的人、她的家，她的志業與作品，對於《自由中國》的同事、歷年參加「愛荷華國際寫作計畫」的作家們，以及家人及伴侶，卻有著強大內聚的力量。本片聽聶華苓娓娓道來她的愁、她的愛。

The story lays bare the sorrows and triumphs in the life of Nieh Hua-ling, Chinese novelist and essayist. From her struggles during WWII to persecution under Taiwan’s Kuomintang, Nieh was the constant outsider. But her work has inspired generations of Chinese writers.
