由擅長改編文學作品法國電影名導班諾賈克執導，將尚塔爾托馬斯曾獲2002年法國費米娜獎的同名小說搬上大銀幕。1879年法國大革命的槍聲擊碎了凡爾賽宮的繁華迷夢，瑪莉安東尼的華麗豪奢雖不是本片意欲呈現的重點，但為了更準確地呈現這位末代皇后的特質，由德國女星黛安克鲁格擔綱演出原籍奧地利的瑪莉皇后，負責詮釋讀書侍女的雷雅賽杜戲分更是吃重。榮膺為第六十二屆柏林影展的開幕片，成功呈現歷史場景，導演風格洗練沈穩。
1789, at the eve ofthe Revolution: Versailles occupants still livehappily, unconcerned by the increasing turmoil in Paris. When news about the storming of theBastille reaches the Court, aristocrats and servants desert the Palace, leavingthe Royal Family alone. But Sidonie Laborde, a young Queen's reader, refuses toflee. She feels secure as she is under protection of the Queen of France. Shedoes not yet know these are the last three days she would spend by her side.
